OpenAI just crossed 100,000 advertisers on ChatGPT, eight months after launching ads, and expanded the platform to 89 countries worldwide in the same announcement.
The number that reframes the whole story is 1.2 billion weekly users. That is the platform advertisers are now buying into—not a search index, not a social feed, but a conversation in which someone is actively explaining what they want, narrowing options, and deciding. OpenAI is calling it the moment of consideration, and now that moment has ads attached to it.
The geographic push is aggressive. Twenty-six countries joined in a single move, including 14 across Latin America—Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, and others following earlier launches in Mexico and Brazil—alongside new markets in Nigeria, South Africa, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Serbia, and Ukraine. Inventory is available through technology partners or self-serve through Ads Manager. L'Oréal is testing early, describing the journeys it aims to pioneer as running "from discovery, to evaluation, to agentic commerce."
The monetization structure is deliberate: ads appear only on Free and Go plans, leaving Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscriptions clean. That stands to protect the subscription revenue line while turning the Free and Go tiers into a global ad surface at scale.
The shift this illustrates
This is structurally the same move Google made when it turned search intent into an ad market, and the same move Amazon made when it built an ad business on top of purchase behavior. The difference is compression: a user asking ChatGPT to compare options can be further down the funnel than someone typing a keyword, without the advertiser having to do anything to get them there.
It rhymes with what Microsoft is attempting by monetizing Copilot surfaces inside enterprise workflows, and with what Meta built when it turned social engagement into a targeting layer. The consistent pattern is that whoever owns the decision moment captures the margin. For years that was Google. The fact that a platform with no ad history reached 100,000 advertisers in just over eight months suggests the ownership of that moment is now genuinely in play.
OpenAI says the next phase adds formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities. The infrastructure is still being assembled while brands commit spend—which is when the buyers who move first stand to gain a pricing advantage, and when the strategic exposure is largest for the platforms that don't.
